Quick answers

How much does the Night Walk cost?

$60 per person, with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 5 per group. A 50% deposit is required to book (PayPal accepted), with the remaining 50% paid in cash to your guide on the day of the tour.

How long does it last?

About 2 hours, walking at a slow pace so there's time to stop and look for wildlife.

What might I see?

Frogs, insects, spiders and other nocturnal cloud-forest species. Sightings vary by night and season — nothing is guaranteed in the wild.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. It's one of the easiest tours we run — the route is short and the pace slow, but you do need closed shoes with grip.

The forest changes at night

Most visitors experience Bajos del Toro during the day, on the way to a waterfall. The Night Walk shows the other half: the same cloud forest once the light goes and a completely different set of species becomes active.

This is a slow, quiet tour. Your guide leads with a torch and stops often — on a leaf, a branch, the edge of a stream — to point out what would be invisible to someone walking alone. Because we cap the group at 5 people, everyone gets close enough to actually see and photograph what's found.

What you might see

  • Cloud-forest frogs, including glass frogs and rain frogs near water.
  • Insects and spiders that only emerge after dark.
  • Sleeping birds and, occasionally, small nocturnal mammals.
  • Bioluminescent fungi and night-blooming plants, depending on the season.

This is wild forest, not a reserve with fixed enclosures — what appears varies night to night. Rainy, humid evenings are usually the most active.

What's included

  • Experienced local guide, English and Spanish.
  • Small group: minimum 2 people, maximum 5.
  • Available every day; start time is arranged with you, after sunset.
  • Transport can be added, priced by distance from your accommodation.

What to bring

  • Closed shoes with grip — trails are wet and uneven.
  • Light long sleeves and trousers.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Water, and a torch or headlamp if you have one.

Important: no tour can be done in open shoes. At night this matters even more — the ground is wet and hard to read.

Frequently asked questions

Start time is arranged with you when you book, since sunset shifts through the year in Costa Rica. Message us with your date and we'll confirm the exact time.
Wildlife reacts to noise and light. A small group moves quietly, sees more, and lets everyone get close enough to look properly at what the guide finds.
Your guide carries a torch and does the spotting. Bringing your own headlamp is useful for watching your footing, but it isn't required.
Yes, with a parent or responsible adult. The route is easy, but it's dark and the ground is uneven — message us with your children's ages and we'll advise.
Light rain often makes for a better night — amphibians are far more active. If conditions become unsafe, your guide will help you reschedule to another evening.
Yes. Your guide will help you get close enough for a good shot without disturbing the animal. Flash is used sparingly and at the guide's discretion.

Combine it with a daytime tour

The Night Walk pairs well with any morning tour — do a waterfall hike during the day and head back out after dark.
